Well-known children’s and young adult author Jack Gantos visited Eye4You on Thursday, July 24. Using voice chat, he shared with the teen audience stories about his childhood experiences in school, his lifelong interest in reading and writing, and his current daily habits in visiting his local public library, journaling, and authoring books. He advised teens to develop a daily practice of maintaining a journal and offered the following tips: (1) get a small journal - even the size of a matchbox - and write small, (2) use post-it notes for the ideal journal while traveling and then put post-its in your master journal when returning home, (3) use good fountain pens to write, (4) draw a line down the center of your journal page and then write fictional entries to the left of the line, daily matters on the right side, and later look for comparisons between the two, (5) set a beginner goal to write furiously for ten minutes daily to build up stamina for the journaling process.

Teens from various places, including several book clubs and libraries, asked Jack questions during the visit. They reflected fondly on his Joey Pigza and Rotten Ralph books of childhood, but also referred to several favorite young adult titles, including “Hole in My Life”, “Desire Lines”, and “The Love Curse of the Rumbaughs”.  Jack shared that he enjoyed using this new technology and teens in the audience expressed enjoyment of his visit.
